UPDATE

Matthew's House Ministries works with many children and families at the nearby school, Stocking Elementary, and has decided to pass the gift of books onto the school. We have raised enough funds to give EVERY child at Stocking Elementary at least TWO new books! We will be giving these books away at a March is Reading Month celebration at the school!

Why we chose to benefit this ministry:

Our current fundraising efforts seek to provide books as Christmas presents to children from homeless and low-income families in the Grand Rapids area.

The Need:

2 out of 3 low-income families don't have any books in their house for their children.
The ratio of books per child in low-income neighborhoods is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children! (Compared to 13 books per child in middle-income neighborhoods).

The Solution

The most successful way to improve the academic achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to books.
Other than improving literacy, books also reduce stress, increase self-confidence, improve memory and focus, and help develop social-emotional skills needed to succeed in life.
